Abstract: In large areas of tropical forests, the utilization of cluster-sampling in forest inventories usually results in great efficiency. On this research - based on a cross-shaped structural model of clusters, formed by four rectangular sub-units - the influences due to the size variation of the sample sub-units of the precision in volume estimate are analyzed, and from this variation the ideal sample area is determined, as well as the optimal distance between the sub-units and the central point. The main observations made on this study and that should be considered when preparing any inventory plan are the following: 1 - the values of the intra-cluster correlation factor for the volumes increases in proportion to the increase of size of the sub-units, resulting in an increase of the number of sub-units needed. 2 - the coefficient of variation decreases exponentially, becoming more stable when the sub-unit reaches 0,32 ha. 3 - the value of the intra-cluster correlation factor for the volumes increases as the distance of the sub-units from the central point is increasing, resulting in a decrease of the minimum number of sub-units needed.
