A terra na história e a história na terra : desdobramentos da noção de antropoceno na narrativa histórica

Abstract

Resumo: A presente tese tem como objetivo refletir acerca da reconfiguração epistemológica da ciência histórica suscitada pelo conceito de Antropoceno. Para tanto, foi dividida em três partes. A primeira parte se destina a refletir sobre o processo de ampliação da temporalidade telúrica e a investigar o processo de constituição da geologia enquanto a ciência capaz de dar sentido à longa história da Terra. Por isso, analisa tratados, livros e documentos produzidos entre os séculos XVII e XIX sobre a questão da idade da Terra e das suas etapas históricas. No segundo momento, investiga o desenvolvimento da concepção de que as condições climáticas do planeta também são dotadas de uma historicidade própria. A consolidação desta ideia foi condição para formulação do conceito de Antropoceno. São analisados também embates referentes à formalização do termo enquanto etapa geológica e sua decorrente inserção na Tabela Cronoestratigráfica Internacional também conhecida como Escala do Tempo Geológico. Nesta parte, os principais documentos examinados são obras e artigos científicos publicados por climatologistas, geólogos, biólogos e demais pesquisadores da Ciência do Sistema Terra entre o final do século XX e início do XXI. Na última parte, avalia, no campo da ciência histórica, algumas implicações teóricas da percepção de que a ação antrópica se transformou em um poderoso agente geológico capaz de induzir mudanças ambientais que comprometem as condições de habitabilidade do planeta no futuro próximo. Para isso, dialoga com autores e autoras que propõe outras formas de se pensar a agentividade histórica, as temporalidades e a própria noção de historicidade. Analisa também algumas proposições teóricas de autores e autoras que apontam a necessidade de mobilizar novas categorias conceituais na produção de narrativas históricas sobre e no Antropoceno.

Abstract: This thesis aims to reflect on the epistemological reconfiguration of historical science raised by the concept of Anthropocene. Thereunto, it was separated in three parts. The first seeks to reflect on the expanding of the temporal telluric perception and to investigate the constitution of the science of geology as the science capable of giving meaning to the long Earth’s history. Hence, it analyzes treatises, books and documents produced between the 17th and 19th centuries about the age of the Earth and its historical stages. In a second moment, it investigates the development of the concept that the planet's climatic conditions are also endowed with their own historicity. The consolidation of this idea was a condition for the formulation of the Anthropocene concept. It also examinates discussions regarding the formalization of the term as a geological period and its resulting insertion in the International Chronostratigraphic Table known as the Geological Time Scale as well. In this part, the main documents examined are works and scientific articles published by climatologists, geologists, biologists and other Earth System Science researchers between the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. The final part, it evaluates, in the field of historical science, some theoretical implications of the perception that anthropic action has become a powerful geological agent capable of inducing environmental changes that compromise the habitability conditions of the planet in the near future. For this, it dialogues with authors who propose other ways of thinking about historical agency, temporalities and the very notion of historicity. It also analyzes some theoretical propositions of authors that point out the need to mobilize new conceptual categories in the production of historical narratives about and in the Anthropocene.
