This study assesses the spatial variation of benthic macrofauna in sublittoral sites of Guaratuba Bay, south Brazil, in two situations. Samplings were done in two surveys: winter/2006 and summer/2007, in order to describe the faunal distribution along the the bay and to detect differences among pre-defined sectors based on a supposed salinity and energy gradient of the system. Samples were obtained with a modified Van Veen grab, with 0,065 m² of area, in 36 points distributed in three sections, each with three transects perpendicularly arranged with a supposed salinity gradient along the whole estuary, for a total of 144 biological samples. We found 135.762 organisms belonging to 11 phyla and 152 taxa. Mollusca represented 93% of the total abundance, followed by Annelida (3.26%) and Arthropoda (2,82% ). Multivariate analyses discriminated three different sectors, defined by differential faunistic structures, hydrographic and granulometric properties. The canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that grain size and organic matter content were the most important factors determining the macrofauna distribution. The PERMANOVA tests also showed significant spatial differences, but not seasonal ones. Uni- and multivariate results evaluation suggests the hydrodynamic or the environmental energy gradient as primary factors structuring the benthic macrofauna associations in this area.
