Abstract: The main goal of this research was to evaluate the influence of different hydraulic parameters and adverse environmental conditions on the performance and stability of anaerobic fluidized bed reactors (AnFBR) used for the treatment of landfill leachate and synthetic wastewater (SWW). Two identical reactors were built, RanLFb1 and RanLFb2, with a total volume of 1.9 L and H/D~2. The support material for biofilm growth was sand with a geometric mean diameter of 357 Mi m. Before being inoculated into RanLFb, the anaerobic sludge was acclimated for 78 days in bench-scale biological reactors (BSBR). The startup of the AnFBR was performed with sludge from the BSBR and landfill leachate. This phase lasted 334 days and was performed intermittently. After a series of hydraulic tests, a minimum fluidization velocity of 10.7 m/h was obtained during the intermittent operation. Fluidization velocities between 22 and 40 m/h promoted the optimal range for operation with uniform fluidization of the support material. Under this condition, fluidization intensities (IF) between 25% and 45% favored less formation of dead zones and preferential channels. The period of continuous operation of the AnFBR lasted 49 days. During this time, an average COD concentration reduction efficiency (ECOD) of 27% was observed when the volumetric organic load (VOL) was increased from 1 to 2.5 kg COD/m³d. The low COD reduction efficiency was attributed to the low biodegradability of the leachate. Over a 317-day period, ECOD values of 87% were recorded when AnFBR was operated with SWW, and the VOL was increased from 0.72 to 4.2 kg COD/m3d. The values of the ratios of total alkalinity to total volatile acidity (TA/TVA) and of intermediate alkalinity to partial alkalinity (IA/PA) were 5.5 and 0.15, respectively. These values are related to the stability and buffering of the system. During the application of stress conditions, it was observed a significant reduction in the RanLFb1 performance, when no nutrients were supplemented to the system. The average ECOD value was 65.3%, with values of 2.02 and 0.6 for AT/AVT and AI/AP, respectively, which suggests instability of the system. When the VOL was increased from 2.3 to 3.6 kg COD/m3d, an average value of 67.9% was observed for ECOD, as well as a tendency towards system instability. The control of temperature has proven to be an important factor. A reduction in the ECOD was observed from 91% to 76%, respectively, for average temperature ranges of 9°C and 16.5°C. Regarding the RanLFb1, an IF of 35% resulted in an ECOD of 92%, whereas the IF of 20% and 50% the ECOD were 88% and 90%, respectively. The recovery of the conditions prior to the applied disturbances occurred after 10 days of operation at the most. The recovery of the conditions prior to the applied disturbances occurred after 10 days of operation at the most. Finally, AnFBR, with H/D~2, proved to be a viable alternative for the treatment of wastewater with a high concentration of biodegradable organic matter, even when subjected to stress conditions.
