BRD's (Bycatch Reduction Devices) are technical modifications in the body of the fishing nets in order to reduce the incidental capture of non- target species. Brachyuran crustacean occur in large numbers in the accompanying fauna of shrimp trawling, however, there is a paucity of research addressing the efectiveness of this devices in their reduction. Samples were collected in the inner shelf of the central coast of Paraná with the fisherman of the Balneário Barrancos. The main objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of the BRD's in the exclusion of brachyura. The exclusions were shown to be heterogeneous among the different classes of carapace width (CW). Hard BRD's like grids, excluded the largest brachyuran while soft BRD's, like Square Mesh (SM) and Window Scape (WE excluded the smallest Callinectes sp, was the most abundant brachyuran being dominant during the spring, summer and fall. The devices with the higher rate of exclusion for brachyurids where the grids (G24 = 62,1 % and G37 = 52,92 %), however it was also observed a higher loss of target species by these devices (G24 =15,77 %; G37= 32,08 % ) . The BRD's that involved such changes in the net were more efficient in excluding smaller brachyuran as the genus Persephona sp. (J.E=29,64 %; MQ=36,04 %) and with a lower shrimp loss (J.E= 8,01 % e M.Q=2,41 % ) when compared with the grids. The BRD's are promising for the exclusion of brachyuran bycatch shrimp trawl the coast of Paraná. However, more tests should be conducted for improvement of these devices together with fisherman.
