The temporal fluctuations in the composition and density of hydromedusae were studied along four sites in a cross-shell section in the inner continental shelf of Parana. Samplings were taken between January 2009 and May 2012, about every three months. In this period, zooplankton was collected by a cylindrical-conical net (30 cm mouth diameter and mesh 200 µm), along hydrographic and climatological parameters. A total of 22 taxa were found, 16 meroplanktonic and 5 holoplanktonic, besides actinula-larvae (meroplanktonic or holoplanktonic). The holoplanktonic taxa were the most abundant (83 % of total). Liriope tetraphylla, a holoplanktonic hydromedusae, represented more than 80% of specimens and was numerically dominated during all period, expect in February 2012, when Proboscydactila ornata was the most abundant. Actinula-larvae, Obelia spp. and Solmaris corona were also abundant in this study. There were significant differences in abundances between sampling months and years (P < 0.05), but not between sites and seasons (P > 0.05). The lowest densities occurred in January 2009 and July 2011 (average < 10) ind.m), and the highest occurred in April 2010 (average of 1176 ind.m" and max. of 3227 ind.m), therefore, 2010 was the year of highest abundance (average of 470 ind.m). Probably, this high density is related to the El Niño episode in 2010, because this phenomenon favors the entry of nutrients into the inner shelf, thus increasing phytoplankton production and zooplankton abundance, also contributes to an accumulation of coastal jellyfish in the inner shelf because of the intensity of freshwater discharge generated by the rainfall, and can cause a water concentration in the inner shelf because of the increase of south winds, which tends to increment the density of zooplanktonic organisms in shallow coastal regions.
