This study aimed to evaluate the spatial and temporal variations of chlorophyll-a (Cl-a) concentrations in relation to physical and chemical parameters in a transect perpendicular to the coast on the shallow continental shelf of Paraná State in the isobaths of 8, 10, 12 and 15 meters, from 2009 to 2012, every three months. In the field, the physical variables temperature, salinity and water transparency were measured, the last one using a Secchi disk. Water samples were collected and filtered in the field, the filter was reserved for future analysis of Cl-a, and the filtered water for the nutrient concentration of nitrite + nitrate, phosphate and silicate, in the laboratory by spectrophotometry. The coastal water (CA) predominated at all oceanographic cruises. The concentrations of Cl-a ranged between <0.1 and 10.3 ug.L. In general, higher values concentrated on subsurface or on the bottom, and during spring and autumn. Nutrient contents ranged from <0.1 to 13.3 UM (nitrite + nitrate); <0.1 and 4.85 uM (phosphate); and <0.1 110 UM (silicate). The highest concentrations for the three nutrients occurred during winter and spring, generally in the form of higher concentrations peaks in the water column and/or on the bottom. This may have occurred due to re-suspension processes caused by the tide and winds and/or due to benthic re-mineralization processes of organic matter. The highest concentrations of inorganic nutrients and Cl-a were mostly found near shore due to input of nutrients by continental drainage and the plume of estuaries. The principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple regression showed an inverse relationship between Cl-a and salinity, suggesting that primary production occurs more intensely in less saline waters, closer to the coast, where the highest nutrient values were found. Was concluded that the study area is mainly influenced by external processes, such as the action of the tide, waves, winds and continental contribution, which promote the distribution of inorganic nutrients and Cl-a to the shallow shelf of the state.
