Abstract: Pregnancy is an experience of profound changes on the mother body: the woman's body prepares itself to shelter the baby's body. Thus, the relationship between mother and baby in the womb is different from other relationships, due to the ambiguity of a body that one is and is not at the same time, which feels something and is felt by another. It is a chiasmatic relationship: there is an intercorporeal intertwining in which both baby and mother are mutually touching and touched. Therefore, being pregnant reorganizes woman's corporal scheme, altering the projects in which she is engaged and her lifeworld. Besides, pregnancy reveals to woman the possibility to disclose the senses of being a mother. Pregnancy loss, also called fetal death, interrupts this relationship that was flourishing between a woman and her baby and forces her to face the fact that life can end at any moment. Although pregnancy loss is a common phenomenon in Brazil and the world, the mother bereavement and its mourning are silenced, and its expression is frequently denied. This study aimed to understand the experience of maternal bereavement in pregnancy loss. To do so, five interviews were conducted with a starter question: "How was your experience of losing your child?" The participants had suffered gestational losses between eight and 38 weeks. It was used Giorgi's phenomenological method, and the data analysis revealed nine elements that constitute the mourning experience in pregnancy loss: pain; lack of meaning; shock; anger and envy; guilt; fear of a new loss; being the mother of a new child; loneliness; re-signification. The study shows that gestational loss is experienced as a loss of a baby, not a meaningless fetus or embryo. When a mother loses a baby, she also loses a future together, the trust in her own body and the mother she intended to be with that child. Furthermore, this kind of loss is a peculiar experience for women that experience the death of another one in her own body. It is concluded that this mourning needs special care, from the news and throughout life, since it does not end in the birth, funeral or with the arrive of a new child. However, it is possible to constitute new meanings to the loss, the relationship with the lost baby and the mode of being that was unfolded.
