Abstract: Spacing is an important factor that influences growth, competition between trees and consequently forest production. Understanding the behavior of commercial species such as Eucalyptus in different spacing is of fundamental interest for forest planning. Thus, the overall objective of the work was to evaluate the competition of Eucalyptus spp. and the dendrometric estimates at different spacings using Nelder's systematic design. The data used in the study come from an experiment with ten eucalyptus clones implanted in nine adapted Nelder circles, located in the northern state of Tocantins, Brazil. The work is structured in three chapters, in which, in the first chapter the relationship between the dendrometric variables diameter, height and volume with the vital area per plant was discussed; the spatial autocorrelation was also verified between the observations and the multivariate profile analysis was applied. In the second chapter an index was developed to describe the competition between the trees in different spacings, as well as the performance of traditional indexes dependent and independent of the distance in different spacings and evaluated the effect of competition on mortality of the trees. The index (IC proposed) was formulated taking into account that the competition is dependent on the population density and the closer the trees are, the greater the competition; the high density also exerts influence in the diameters of the stand. Thus, the index results from the product of two ratios, the first ratio is related to the average geometric area of the distances between the trees in the most competitive plot, in relation to the other plots. The second ratio refers to the quadratic mean of the diameters of all the trees in the most competitive plot, in relation to the quadratic means of the diameters of all the trees of the other plots. In the third chapter the estimates of the dendrometric parameters were obtained: number of trees, basal area and volume per hectare by means of the Prodan sampling method in different spacings provided by the Nelder systematic design. The hypotheses that motivated the work were: The behavior of the dendrometric variables height, diameter and volume, presents variation in the different spacings, in which the larger trees are in the wider spacings. There is spatial autocorrelation between the trees, due to their arrangement in the different spacings. The proposed new competition index can better explain the effect of competition in locations with different spacing, since it is dimensionless with a standardized scale, facilitating the interpretation of the results. The results indicate that the proposed index is appropriate to evaluate the competition of the trees, and presented superior results compared to the traditional competition indexes. The values of the dendrometric variables diameter, height and volume were larger in the wider spacings. The existence of spatial autocorrelation was confirmed to the variables diameter and height. The multivariate profile analysis is efficient to compare the difference of treatments in a systematic Nelder's design. Estimates obtained with Prodan's sampling method showed that the number of trees, basal area and volume per hectare presented decreasing behavior with increasing spacing. Prodan's sampling method is adequate and practical to make estimates in a Nelder's systematic design, since it is not necessary to measure all the trees present in the experiment, and the number of trees in the plots distributed in different spacings is the same.
