Tradição e experiência em Fernando Oliveira : reformas religiosas, cosmografia e história em Portugal do século XVI

Abstract

Resumo: O objetivo desta tese é investigar o desenrolar dos humanismos em Portugal do século XVI com base em duas noções primordiais: experiência e tradição. O percurso metodológico que baliza a pesquisa centra-se na análise da vida de Fernando Oliveira, a partir dos pressupostos da biografia-problema. A escolha deste indivíduo se deu por dois motivos: sua trajetória e produção multifacetada, típica dos humanistas, e pela forma como atuou no interior do sistema normativo em que se encontrava inserido - o Antigo Regime luso. Oliveira, de formação religiosa dominicana, foi também piloto náutico, mestre de filhos de nobres e revisor da Universidade de Coimbra. Sua produção escrita ultrapassou tais caracterizações, visto que suas obras abordam gramática, filologia, cosmografia, estratégia de guerra náutica, arquitetura naval, cartografia e história. A primeira parte do trabalho trata de episódios e produções oliveirianas em que prevalecem o recurso à experiência, aqui entendida tanto no que diz respeito à forma como os Clássicos foram retomados, como no que tange à defesa do testemunho de vista. São abordadas, sempre em consonância com o humanismo luso, as reformas religiosas e educacionais que perpassaram o reino e a forma como Oliveira as vivenciou. Entre diversos documentos gerais e institucionais, a fonte primordial é o processo inquisitorial que sofreu, no qual foi acusado de luteranismo. Ainda nesta primeira divisão são analisadas as produções e atuações náuticas de Oliveira, a fim de entendê-las no cenário da institucionalização das práticas cosmográficas, capitaneadas especialmente pela Casa da Índia. Deseja-se compreender como Oliveira, assim como alguns de seus coetâneos, representaram uma ponte entre a teoria e a prática e em que medida contribuíram para o desenvolvimento das bases do que se convencionou chamar de Revolução Científica Moderna. A noção de tradição serve de fio condutor da segunda parte da tese, pois neste recorte prevalecem as obras produzidas com vistas à manutenção da liberdade e da soberania de Portugal no contexto da crise sucessória que resultaria na União Ibérica. Intenta-se perceber que configuração epistemológica e metodológica adquiriu sua produção historiográfica. A articulação da análise desses cenários, livros e ações permitiu perceber a ressonância dos pressupostos humanistas na relação com o saber, notadamente na intervenção na natureza a partir da lógica da experiência, na tentativa de sistematização e divulgação da produção do conhecimento, no relacionamento entre teoria e prática e na utilização da história para fins políticos e religiosos. Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to investigate the development of humanisms in Portugal in the 16th century based on two primordial notions: experience and tradition. The methodological path that leads to the research focuses on the analysis of the trajectory of Fernando Oliveira, based on the assumptions of the biografia-problema. The choice of this individual occurred for two reasons: his trajectory and multifaceted production, typical of humanists, and the way he acted within the normative system in which he was inserted - the Antigo Regime luso. Oliveira, of Dominican religious formation, was also a nautical pilot, master of children of nobles and reviewer of the University of Coimbra. His writing has gone beyond such characterizations, since his works deal with grammar, philology, cosmography, nautical warfare strategy, naval architecture, cartography and history. The first part of the work deals, in particular, with Oliveira episodes and productions in which the use of experience prevails, understood both as regards the way in which the Classics were taken up, as for the defense of the testemunho de vista. The religious and educational reforms that permeated the kingdom and the way in which Oliveira lived them are always approached in line with Portuguese humanism. Among several general and institutional documents, the primordial source is the inquisitorial process which he suffered, in which he was accused of Lutheranism. Also in this first division are analyzed the productions and nautical performances of Oliveira, in order to understand them in the scenario of the institutionalization of the cosmographic practices, captained especially by the Casa da Índia. We want to understand how Oliveira, like some of his contemporaries, represent a bridge between theory and practice and, to what extent, contributed to the development of the bases of what has been called the Modern Scientific Revolution. The notion of tradition serves as the guiding principle of the second part of the thesis, since in this clause the works in which the author produced with a view to maintaining the freedom and sovereignty of Portugal in the context of the succession crisis that would result in the Iberian Union prevail. The articulation of the analysis of these scenarios, books and actions made it possible to perceive the influence of humanistic presuppositions in relation to knowledge, notably in the intervention in nature from the logic of experience, in the attempt to systematize and disseminate the production of knowledge, in the relationship between theory and practice and in the use of history for political and religious purposes.
