Abstract: Being trilingual, Portuguese, Plautdietsch and Hochdeutsch is part of everyday life of the Witmarsum colony, located at the east of the second plateau in the State of Paraná, founded by German Mennonite immigrants who came to Brazil in 1930. Tracing the historical profile of this community, an ethnic-religious minority, the present research intends to analyze the use and language shift in the Witmarsum colony. For the development of this socio-linguistic study, several aspects were selected, which were considered relevant for the understanding of this situation: age, gender and level of education. In order to obtain reliable results that represent the community we selected a main representative corpus of 24 informants; and two control samples (total of 11 informants). From initial hypotheses we could verify different rates in the use of Plautdietsch, Hochdeutsch and Portuguese in the community. Thus, the present study attempts to verify in which spheres - religious, family, leisure, work etc. - of the community life, there is greater variation in the use of the languages, and to what extent social, religious, and economic factor influence the code switching, very common in linguistic islands as Witmarsum. Attention was also given to the attitude of the informants with respect to the languages, not only during the interviews, but also as a projection of what happened in the last three generation, especially with respect to the survival of the Plautdietsch.
