Equivalência tradutória e significação

Abstract

Resumo: Embora figure no quadro teórico de diversos trabalhos, que por vezes partem dela para definir tradução, a noção de equivalência costuma receber formulações notadamente vagas. Além disso, por vezes encontramos a noção relacionada a uma postura normativa dentro dos estudos da tradução, tornando sua produtividade no âmbito dos Estudos da Tradução algo duvidosa. A despeito da falta de clareza nos termos em que o conceito é definido, dadas vertentes teóricas (como o Funcionalismo ou a Desconstrução) são categóricos ao afirmar que não é possível caracterizar a tradução em termos de relações de equivalência de qualquer tipo, questionando a possibilidade de se estabelecer uma tal relação entre dois textos ou porções de texto. Partindo de uma perspectiva essencialmente descritiva e de um instrumental teórico da Semântica da Teoria de Modelos, o presente trabalho pretende analisar a possibilidade e a produtividade heurística de um possível entendimento da noção de equivalência, tratada em termos stritamente semânticos e verificar inclusive as eventuais contribuições que o conceito pode dar ao entendimento do que significa traduzir.

Abstract: Although used in the theoretical framework of many works - which often start from it to define what translation is, the notion of equivalence commonly receive very vague definitions. Moreover, we usually find the notion related to a normative perspective on translation, making its productivity in the field somewhat doubtful. In spite of the lack of clarity in the terms in which the concept is usually defined, ome theoretical frameworks (such as Functionalism or Deconstruction) are categorical in stating that it is not possible to characterize translation in terms of relations of equivalence of any kind, questioning the very possibility of establishing such a relation between two texts or portions of text. Starting from an essentially descriptive perspective and from a theoretical framework of Model-Theoretic Semantics, the present work intends to analyze the possibility and the heuristic productivity of one possible understanding of the notion of equivalence, treated in strictly semantic terms and to verify the possible contributions the concept may give to the understanding of what it means to translate.
