Musas interrompidas, vozes cilenciadas : a representação da figura feminina em três contos de Edgar Allan Poe

Abstract

Resumo: O objetivo do presente trabalho é analisar a representação das personagens femininas nos contos "O retrato oval", "A queda da casa de Usher" e "Berenice", de Edgar Allan Poe, dentro da perspectiva dos estudos feministas e de gênero. Como embasamento teórico foram escolhidas as autoras Rita Felski, para quem as questões de gênero estão atreladas a questões estéticas, Teresa de Lauretis, para quem o gênero é uma construção cultural, e Elisabeth Bronfen, que analisa as representações da amada morta na literatura. A partir da análise dos contos, foi possível identificar certas representações do feminino como um ser silenciado e objeto de uma realização estética que é sempre masculina. Também nos foi possível compreender que tais representações estão enraizadas no imaginário de uma sociedade patriarcal que marginaliza o feminino, transformando-o no "outro" do discurso.

Abstract: The purpose of this work is to analyze the representations of female figures in the narratives "The oval portrait", "The fall of the house of Usher" and "Berenice", by Edgar Allan Poe, from the perspective of gender studies. As a theoretical basis, I chose the works of Rita Felski, who believes that gender questions are related to aesthetical questions, Teresa de Lauretis, who claims that gender is a cultural construction, and Elisabeth Bronfen, who analyzes the representations of the dead beloved in literature. From the analysis, it was possible to identify certain representations of the female figure as an object of an aesthetical realization that is always masculine. It was also possible to understand that these representations are rooted in a patriarcal society that marginalizes the feminine, perceiving it as the "other".
