    Abstract

Abstract: In this work, some experimental techniques were applied to characterize bivalve marine shells, with the intention of better understanding their optical and structural properties. The techniques used were photoluminescence, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed levels of electronic energy transition, scanning electron microscopy allowed visualization of the surface of the shells, and energy dispersive spectroscopy made it possible to verify which elements were present in the samples, as well as their concentrations. Raman spectroscopy allowed verification of the vibrational modes of chemical bonds and also identification of CaCO3 and its crystalline phases such as aragonite and calcite. These results contribute to the physicochemical understanding of marine shells, providing the initial step towards a more specific study
