Revisão taxonômica e análise filogenética de Opsiphanes Doubleday, [1849] (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) : uma abordagem integrativa

Abstract

Resumo: Opsiphanes Doubleday, [1849] (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae: Brassolini) é umgênero exclusivamente neotropical, com ocorrência registrada desde a Argentina até oMéxico. Originalmente, o gênero foi proposto para abrigar três espécies: Opsiphanesboisduvalli Doubleday, [1849], Opsiphanes sallei Doubleday, [1849] e Opsiphanes reevesiiDoubleday, [1849], sendo revisado algumas vezes durante o século XX. Até o presenteestudo, Opsiphanes era formado por 14 espécies, 60 subespécies e 38 sinônimos. As espéciese subespécies do gênero apresentam variação morfológica e, por essa razão, vários nomes têmsido propostos para representar a diversidade do grupo nas Américas do Norte, Central e doSul, táxons que muitas vezes não foram adequadamente descritos e/ou delimitados. Adificuldade em reconhecer as espécies e respectivas subespécies restringe o desenvolvimentode estudos que investigam o papel ecológico, aspectos genéticos, comportamentais eevolutivos desses organismos, presentes nos ecossistemas tropicais. Nesse sentido, reunimosinformações sobre os estágios imaturos, dados morfológicos, moleculares e de distribuição,com o intuito de fornecer hipóteses taxonômicas para as espécies e subespécies deOpsiphanes. Após a integração desses dados, que incluiu análises de aproximadamente 5.500exemplares e todas as espécies conhecidas para o gênero, foi possível definir dois grupos:"cassiae" e "quiteria"; o grupo "quiteria" foi subdividido em seis subgrupos: "boisduvallii","zelotes", "sallei", "quiteria", "fabricii" e "invirae". As mudanças taxonômicas incluem aproposição de sinônimos, combinações novas, status restituídos e status novos. Para garantir acorreta identificação dos taxa, foram designados nove neótipos: Opsiphanes bogotanusDistant, 1875, Opsiphanes aurivillii Röber, 1906, Papilio glycerie Fabricius, 1787,Opsiphanes zelotes zelus Stichel, 1908, Opsiphanes badius var. cauca Röber, 1906,Opsiphanes erebus Röber, 1927, Potamis invirae Hübner, [1808], Opsiphanes sticheli Röber,1906, Opsiphanes invirae ledon Fruhstorfer, 1912; e sete lectótipos: Opsiphanes tamarinditamarindi ab. spadix Stichel, 1902, Opsiphanes camena Satudinger, 1886, Opsiphanes zelotesHewitson, 1873, Opsiphanes sallei Doubleday, [1849], Opsiphanes quirinus Godman &Salvin, 1881, Opsiphanes cassina numatius Fruhstorfer, 1912, Opsiphanes cassina periphetesFruhstorfer, 1912. Abstract: Opsiphanes Doubleday, [1849] (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae: Brassolini) is anexclusively neotropical genus, occurring from Argentina to Mexico. The genus was proposedto house three species: Opsiphanes boisduvalli Doubleday, [1849], Opsiphanes salleiDoubleday, [1849], and Opsiphanes reevesii Doubleday, [1849], being revised a few timesduring the 20th century. Until the present study, Opsiphanes consisted of 14 species, 60subspecies, and 38 synonyms. The species and subspecies of the genus present morphologicalvariation and for this reason, several names have been proposed to represent the group'sdiversity, taxa that have often not been adequately described and/or delimited. The difficultyin recognizing the species and respective subspecies restricts the development of studies thatinvestigate the ecological roles, genetic, behavioral, and evolutionary aspects of theseorganisms, present in tropical ecosystems. In this sense, we have analyzed information onimmature stages, morphological, molecular, and distribution data, in order to providetaxonomic hypotheses for Opsiphanes species and subspecies. After integrating these data,which included analyzes of approximately 5,500 specimens and all species known for thegenus, it was possible to define two groups: "cassiae" and "quiteria"; the "quiteria" groupwas subdivided into six subgroups: "boisduvallii", "zelotes", "sallei", "quiteria", "fabricii"and "invirae". Taxonomic changes include the proposition of synonyms, new combinations,restituted status, and new status. To ensure the correct identification of the taxa, nineneotypes were designated: Opsiphanes bogotanus Distant, 1875, Opsiphanes aurivillii Röber,1906, Papilio glycerie Fabricius, 1787, Opsiphanes zelotes zelus Stichel, 1908, Opsiphanesbadius var. cauca Röber, 1906, Opsiphanes erebus Röber, 1927, Potamis invirae Hübner,[1808], Opsiphanes sticheli Röber, 1906, Opsiphanes invirae ledon Fruhstorfer, 1912; andseven lectotypes: Opsiphanes tamarindi tamarindi ab. spadix Stichel, 1902, Opsiphanescamena Satudinger, 1886, Opsiphanes zelotes Hewitson, 1873, Opsiphanes sallei Doubleday,[1849], Opsiphanes quirinus Godman & Salvin, 1881, Opsiphanes cassina numatiusFruhstorfer, 1912, Opsiphanes cassina periphetes Fruhstorfer, 1912.
