Abstract: The mainstream Indian cinema in Hindi works as a great mediator and producer of the cultural and visual imagery of contemporary India. It followed the history of the subcontinent in the post-colonial world, which has been shaken by new politics and the social consequences of the Partition of India in 1947. Among the recent cinematographic narratives we have Padmaavat (2018), an epic that tells the story of the legendary eponymous Hindu queen who committed the ritual of self-immolation to avoid being captured by the villain, the Sultan of Delhi Alauddin Khalji. The film presents a version of the story aligned with Hindu nationalism, as a result, in this research we seek to understand how the construction of this narrative took place and how it tensioned with the history of the young Indian nation, pointing to the relationship with the formation of national sovereignty with the gender norms. With that aim, we will use as a theoretical basis the authors Veena Das, Ramya Sreenivasam, Jacques Derrida, Arjun Appadurai, among others.
