Abstract: The idea of living in the countryside has inspired many and diverse forms of reflection throughout different forms of discourse, such as arts and philosophy. This thesis aims to investigate how this theme was thought in Ancient Rome, especially during the first century before the Christian era, as a manner to attribute meaning to ways of living and behaving. I analyze the Bucolics and the Georgics of Vergil following a methodology that aims to understand the cultural and conceptual debates the poet was invested into. My goal is to demonstrate that Vergil, conscient of the relevance of the image of the land worker, changed some base features of it, such as the ancient moral, the hardness of the work, the monogamic lifestyle and the peaceful relation to the nature. In attempt to understand the conceptual scope with which the poet would have played, the thesis also brings out a review of the bibliography and the ways historians have used some roman ideals to create rigid assumptions about the farmers. While exposing this scope, the thesis demonstrates not only how important was the debate on the theme both in the past and the present, but also contributes to understand the ancient ideas about behavior in a less rigid manner, opening a new field of investigation on the basic concepts with ancient romans could have built their ways of life
