Abstract: The aim of this research is presenting the constitution of the violin family at France in the second half of the 17th century, more specifically during the period of activity of Jean- Baptiste Lully at the court of Louis XIV (1653-1687). Furthermore, in order to understand the main means of employment of these instruments at that time - the orchestra, we focus on the study of the ensembles of the same court, whose representativeness directly influenced the national artistic practice. The first part of the dissertation is dedicated to the description of the samples that constituted this family of instruments. Called of "violons" at that time, they were divided according to their sonorities, being presented as dessus (treble), basse (bass), haute-contre, taille and quinte de violon (middle voices), built for use in ensemble, in which each instrument contributed to the achievement of a particular sonority. In the second part of this research we approached the "bandes" (the proper term for the French orchestra) of the Louis XIV's court. For this, we present a historical context of the period and a description of the departments responsible for the music of this institution. We have concentrated on the Symphonistes de la Chapelle Royale and the Douze Joüers de Violons de la Grande Écurie. In this way, we can broadly understand the importance of the "violons" for the establishment of the French style of the period. Keywords: violin family in France; violons; orchestras at the court of Louis XIV; Jean- Baptiste Lully.
