Abstract: The threat of potable-water scarcity is one of the main concerns of the researchers when thinking about the future of humanity. There are many reasons, from environmental to economic perspectives that motivate the search for alternative solutions to minimize the problems inherent in this situation. Among sustainable solutions it can be affirmed that the techniques of containing and retaining rain water in residences, schools and other buildings contribute to the rational use of water, reflecting the preservation of potable water resources, as well as generating financial savings. The present work was dedicated to insuring the conservation of potable water through the implementation of a system using rain water for non-potable needs in a school building. The research encompassed gathering of data about the existing structure and population, estimating the current usage of non-potable water to be replaced by rain water gathering techniques. The results were confirmed by checking the invoices of water consumption during the past year, that is, documentary research combined with actual field data. Therefore, after gathering all the relevant data for the system through market research, the costs for the implementation of such a system were arrived at and finally an economic viability analysis was undertaken for the new system’s implementation. As a result of these studies, it has been determined that the implementation of a rain water gathering system for the Julia Wanderley High School is economically viable since is provides a great potential for savings of potable water resulting in monetary savings in the mid-term combined with immediate environmental benefits for the region.
