Abstract: The reasons that lead entrepreneurs to create their own businesses are fundamental
tools for the understanding of the entrepreneurship in Brazil. However, there is still
little research in the country that analyzes the process of business creation and
practically there are no studies aimed at the dekasegui people (ethnic Japanese from
Latin America, specially Brazilians, who migrate to work in Japan taking advantage of
their Japanese citizenship and immigration laws). The process for the creation of new
companies involves different dimensions which vary according to many authors.
Gartner (1985) presents a model in the entrepreneur process that relates four
dimensions: the individual features, the environment, the process organization and
the process through which the new companies had been created. This research
aimed at analyzing, based on a multiple case study and supported by Gartner’s
model (1985), how the features of the individuals, the organizations and the
environment influence the success or the failure of the new companies created by
the dekaseguis in the Northeast of the Parana State, Brazil. Six cases were analyzed,
three success and three failure cases. The analyses and comparisons of the cases
lead to the finding based on the features of the individuals, that the dekaseguis from
the success companies demonstrated a greater proactive ability than the ones of the
failure companies. They looked for more information regarding their desired business.
They have made a more careful risk assessment of the risks to be undertaken, and
they had a better relationship with people. Besides that, they always looked for
qualification at know-how in trainings and fairs. The results of this study evidenced a
need for a policy of credit concession and charge very clear-sighted on the part of its
managers. The absence of such policy implies the lack of working capital and
financial obligation to companies, as which occurred with the failing companies. All
the researched companies still in the market have a low default rate. Comparing the
characteristics of the environment of dekaseguis’ companies which succeeded, and
the ones who failed, it is clear that, despite the fact that all of them founded their
companies with their stockholder equity, this factor was not enough to warrantee the
survival of their businesses in the market.
