Sêneca e o estoicismo : a construção de um modelo de regime imperial

Abstract

Resumo: A presente dissertação de mestrado tem como objetivo principal investigar de que modo o contexto sócio-político dos anos finais do Principado de Nero exerceu influência sobre o pensamento político do filósofo romano Lúcio Aneu Sêneca, especialmente no que tange ao constructo de um império moral contrastante com os referidos anos finais daquele Principado, que ele enxergou como corrompido e decadente. Para tanto, recobramos a conjuntura do Principado romano e a atuação política de Sêneca dentro deste, com especial ênfase nos anos de governo de Nero, nos quais ele teve posições ambíguas, estando junto do Príncipe nos primeiros anos de sua governança e afastando-se dele quando o mandatário agiu de modo dissonante com o que apregoavam seus ideais políticos. Desse modo, concentramos o foco de nossa pesquisa nesta segunda fase, visando compreender as motivações desse afastamento e os reflexos do mesmo na elaboração daquele outro modelo de império que citamos anteriormente. Neste percurso, concedemos especial atenção à instrumentalização política que Sêneca fez dos conceitos da filosofia estoica de que era adepto e a como o pensador utilizou estes, em última instância, para pensar o poder e atuar politicamente em sua época.

Abstract: The present master's thesis aims to investigate how the socio-political context of the final years of Nero's Principate influenced the political thought of the Roman philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca, particularly in regard to the construction of a moral empire contrasting with the aforementioned final years of that Principate, which he saw as corrupt and decadent. To this end, we review the conjuncture of the Roman Principate and Seneca's political actions within it, with a special emphasis on the years of Nero's rule, during which Seneca held ambiguous positions. He was close to the Prince in the early years of his governance but distanced himself when the ruler acted in a manner inconsistent with the political ideals Seneca espoused. Thus, our research focuses on this second phase, aiming to understand the motivations behind this distancing and its impact on the formulation of the aforementioned alternative model of empire. In this process, we pay special attention to the political instrumentalization of Stoic philosophy, to which Seneca adhered, and how the thinker used it ultimately to reflect on power and engage in political action during his time.
