| pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | Abstract: This thesis focuses on the translation of geographical knowledge related to an atlas of China made by the Tyrolean Jesuit Martino Martini and published by the Dutch printer Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam, in 1655. Titled Novus Atlas Sinensis ("New Atlas of China"), the book comprises of seventeen maps, geographical descriptions of the provinces of the empire and neighboring kingdoms and includes an account of the transition between the Ming and Qing dynasties. Being linked both to the general patterns of cartographic production of the missionaries of the Society of Jesus and to the map and atlas market of the Low Countries in the 17th century, the atlas presents a large amount of information on East Asia coming from different sources, forms and techniques of representation of space, particularly from Chinese writings. Thus, considering that the context of the Jesuit mission in China (of which Martini was part) allowed an intercultural scenario of knowledge exchange, we analyzed a) the practices of translation of Chinese geographical knowledge employed by the Jesuit during the production of his book; and b) the epistemological and formal implications of such translations in the set of information presented in the atlas. Understanding cultural translations as a concept that allows the study of the incorporation of non-European knowledge into Early Modern European interpretations of the world, we argue that the Novus Atlas Sinensis is the product of a non-linear set o f translations that involved selection, synthesis and reorganization of knowledge originating from different epistemologies, as well as a reconfiguration of the way images and texts transmit information. Such translations also highlight traces of transculturality that are essential to understand the global production of knowledge in the Early Modern Age. | pt_BR |
