Although Brazil has an energy matrix that is considered clean, its dependence on water is eminent. In order to decentralize it, other reusable energies can be discussed, one of which is surface geothermal energy, which uses heat from underground to heat and cool buildings. In Switzerland and Austria, this technology has been used since the 1980s and has been popularized around the world ever since. In Brazil, geothermal energy is in its infancy and the first experimental field studies took place at the State University of Northern Rio de Janeiro (UENF) and the University of São Paulo's São Carlos School of Engineering (EESC/USP) in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo respectively. One of their biggest challenges is to size them efficiently, which can vary between horizontal and vertical exchangers, because when the exchangers are positioned at shallower depths, they are impacted by seasonal variations in ambient temperature, long- and short-distance solar radiation, precipitation, evapotranspiration and shading caused by surrounding buildings. There are studies investigating these impacts, but the effect of shading has been little explored and is generally found in solar generation research. Within this context, we set out to study the mechanisms (shading and solar radiation) that interfere in the process of sizing the geothermal air conditioning system, using geotechnical and thermal data on humidity and temperature obtained from a case study of horizontal heat exchangers in a test room located in Maringá (PR), where there is a predominance of residual basaltic soil. To this end, natural density tests were carried out using the crimping method, as well as particle size analysis, liquidity and plasticity limits and the actual specific mass of the grains. Using the results of the geotechnical characterization, horizontal heat exchangers were designed to meet the need to air-condition the test room. In addition, a monitoring program was set up in order to follow the variation in soil temperature and humidity at a depth of 1.5 meters. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the effects of solar thermal radiation and shading, images produced by a thermo-photographic camera and an ordinary camera were taken. The experimental program showed the homogeneity of the soil in the study area. In the research, it was observed that conductivity is the parameter that has the greatest influence on sizing in the literature. It was also found that the analytical method of soil temperature was not representative for the period of analysis. Finally, it was possible to observe that the areas exposed to shading were sensitive to variations in ambient temperature, and also had lower thermal resistance and consequently higher thermal conductivity. On the other hand, in the areas where they were exposed to solar radiation, they showed greater thermal resistance, lower thermal conductivity and little influence from the change between temperature and humidity
