Abstract: The negative impacts of architectural paints are present from the manufacturing process in the industry to its final destination. Several of the conventional paints release volatile organic compounds into the environment, due to their composition of chemical substances that are harmful to human health and the environment. Therefore, rescuing vernacular techniques is an ecological and economic alternative to solve this scenario. The present doctoral research presents a social technology in the area of architectural paints, through the approach of techniques for the elaboration of paints with pigments of vegetal origin; processes for extracting pigments based on a bibliographical review; and possible natural additives that improve color stability through the experiences of craftsmen and artists who work with vegetable paints. From the collected data, mixtures of paints with vegetable pigments were prepared and tests were carried out on resistance to abrasion, resistance to accelerated weathering to simulate their behavior in an external environment, resistance to natural weathering to analyze their behavior in an indoor environment, and were evaluated their characteristics of physical properties such as pH, density and viscosity, in order to compare the results with an industrialized paint commonly used in buildings. Through the statistical method of experimental design of mixture modeling, the research also presents the formulation of a paint recipe with curcumin pigment, extracted from the turmeric root (Curcuma longa L.), considered of good performance according to the technical standards. The results proved that the vegetable pigments, in addition to providing color to the paint mixtures and protection to the binding agent, also directly influence the viscosity and resistance to abrasion, and the natural weathering test proved the viability of using paints made with vegetable pigments in indoor environments of buildings. Through these satisfactory results, this doctoral thesis intends to leverage research on the use of vegetable pigments in civil construction.
