A (im)pureza do sangue e o perigo da mistura : uma etnografia do grupo indígena Potyguara da Paraíba

Abstract

Resumo: Este trabalho, realizado a partir de uma experiência de campo no grupo indígena Potyguara no Estado da Paraíba, procura entender o modo como os índios concebem as distinções internas (entre gerações) e externas (em relação ao "outro") e como entendem o contato. Em outras palavras, o objetivo é compreender a organização social dos Potyguara e o modo nativo de construir relações com o "outro". De um lado, parte da concepção nativa da história, atentando para a compreensão da terra e do sangue, e de um outro, da oposição puro/misturado, centrando o foco nos aspectos da organização social. Em seguida, descreve o lugar da chefia indígena e dos rituais (a festa de S. Miguel e o Toré).

Abstract: This work, developed from a field experience in the indigenous group Potyguara in the State of Paraiba, tries to understand the way as the Indians conceive the internal distinctions (among generations) and external (in relation to the "other") and as they understand the contact. In other words, the objective is to understand the social organization of Potyguara and the native way of building relationships with the "other". On a side, it takes as starting point, the native conception of the history, attempting for the understanding of the land and of the blood, and of another one, of the opposition pure/mixed, centering the focus in the aspects of the social organization. In the sequence, it describes the place of the indigenous leadership and of the rituals (S. Miguel's feast and the Toré).
