Abstract: Acianthera Scheidw. (Orchidaceae, Pleurothallidinae) is composed of 291 neotropical species, well represented in Brazil, distributed mainly in the Atlantic Forest as epiphytes. Acianthera is a monophyletic genus and is divided in nine sections and three subsections. The vegetative organs in the Pleurothallidinae are morphologically stable and are value in taxonomic studies, but never evaluated from a phylogenetic perspective. The objectives of this study were: (a) describe and codify the morphology of the vegetative organs; (b) identify morphological vegetative characters that may characterize the sections of the genus through a phylogenetic approach. A total of 63 species of Acianthera were analyzed and the morphological character matrix comprised by 14 characters. The characters states were optimized with different algorithms in order to explore the vegetative evolution of the vegetative organs of the genus. All the 14 vegetative morphological characters were considered parsimony informative but shows high degree of homoplasies (164 steps length, (CI)= 0.1829 and (RI)= 0.5473). The vegetative morphological characters are highly homoplastic and no synapomorphy could be unambiguously accessed for any section. Six sections could be characterized by containing at least one homoplasies and only four has more than two exclusive homoplasies to be characterized. We argue that more studies increasing sample species and plastid makers and including reproductive characters in the phylogeny are necessary to infer any evolution process in the Acianthera.
