Abstract: In dams with hydroelectric power plants at the toe of the dam, during periods of flood, when there is excess water, the discharge is carried out by the spillway, with an increase in the downstream water level, and, consequently, a decrease in the head for power generation. Part of the loss of head can be recovered, through the ejector effect or ejection in the hydroelectric plant downstream outlet channel, through a powerhouse arrangement combined with hydraulic structures to spill overflows in the same block, called combined hydroelectric plant. The ejector effect is the result of the iteration process of excess water drained by flood spillways close to the flow that leaves the plant's draft tube, transmitting a part of the kinetic energy of the high-velocity flow to the lower-velocity flow, reducing the piezometric height at the output of the plant's draft tube. This master's thesis aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using computational modeling to properly simulate the ejector effect in a low-fall combined hydroelectric plant, through simulations in the OpenFOAM software, using the k - Epsilon turbulence model. Six three-dimensional flow simulations were performed, in model scale, of joint operation of a powerhouse and lateral bottom outlets in free flow and with partial openings of gates. The results of the ejector effect were compared with those obtained in a reduced physical model and the analyzes showed that the computational model reproduced the ejector effect in the downstream outlet channel.
