Abstract

Resumo: Ao longo do século XIX múltiplos grupos étnicos migraram para o Brasil em busca de melhores condições de vida e trabalho, entre eles, estavam os portugueses. Diferente dos fluxos migratórios que trouxeram colonizadores para a região durante o século XVI, aqueles que se deslocavam no final do século XIX, encaravam a travessia pelo Atlântico como uma forma de superar as dificuldades encontradas em Portugal. Neste processo, milhares de e/imigrantes desembarcaram em regiões centrais do país, como São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro, mas também em lugares de menor visibilidade, como Curitiba. Apesar da pouca expressividade do grupo na região, diversos viajantes do período afirmavam que os lusos dominavam as atividades comerciais ao lado dos alemães. Entendendo a desproporção numérica e a relevância social do grupo, assim como, as particularidades da cidade, a presente dissertação ancora-se na problemática de onde estão e quem são estes imigrantes residentes na Comarca de Curitiba ao longo da segunda metade do século XIX. As análises e hipóteses aqui apresentadas são fruto da pesquisa realizada através da documentação judicial do Departamento de Arquivo Público do Paraná. Nela, os portugueses aparecem como acusados, autores, vítimas e testemunhas, e demonstram diversos níveis de relações sociais com a população local, outros grupos étnicos e portugueses. Tais questões nos levam a compreendê-los como um grupo heterogêneo e dinâmico, que apesar das facilidades com a língua e cultura, enfrenta o constante dilema de ser estrangeiro e ter que lutar para assegurar um espaço social - tanto pelas estratégias familiares, com outros imigrantes e com a burguesia local, quanto pela via institucional, seja ela política ou jurídica.

Abstract: During the XIX century, multiple ethnic groups migrated to Brazil in search of better living and working conditions, and among them, there were the Portuguese. Unlike the other migratory movements that have brought colonizers to the area throughout the XVI century, the ones that relocated at the end of the XIX century faced this journey across the Atlantic as a way of overcoming the difficulties found in Portugal. In this process, thousands of e/immigrants landed in central areas of the country, such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, as well as less visible places, like Curitiba. Regardless of having a less numerous demographic presence in the region, many travelers of the time claimed that the Portuguese were dominant in trade activities alongside the Germans. Recognizing the population disadvantage and the social relevance of the group, as well as the characteristics of the city, this dissertation grounds itself on the issue of where and who were these immigrants living in the district of Curitiba over the second half of the XIX century. The analysis and hypothesis presented here are the results of a research that was developed through the Department of Public Archives of Parana’s judicial records. On the basis of these documents, the Portuguese were shown as accused, authors, victims, and witnesses, and also indicate several levels of social relations with the local people, other ethnic groups, and Portuguese. Such matters lead us to understand them as a heterogeneous and dynamic group, despite the language and cultural conveniences, they faced the ongoing dilemma of being foreigners and having to fight to ensure a social space - not only for family strategies with other immigrants and the local bourgeoisie but as well as institutionally, whether political or legal.
