Abstract: The relationship between tourism and museums is interdependent, favors heritage preservation and helps in communication between visitors and society. However, the misaligned planning of this relationship leads to an overvaluation of the purely commercial perspective and tourist staging, which undermines the quality of visitation and experience in certain museums. Museological institutions that cover sensitive memories need specific communication so that they provide personal transformation and do not encourage the commercialization of human suffering. The Museu da Loucura de Barbacena is a museological institution founded in memory of approximately 60,000 Brazilians who died at the Hospital Psiquiátrico Colônia. This work aims to analyze the experience of visiting the Museu da Loucura de Barbacena – MG. To achieve this purpose, this qualitative study was designed as documentary research, with analysis of photographs and comments shared by visitors on the TripAdvisor and Google Local Guides platforms. At first, the choice of the theoretical framework was based on three main axes: conceptualization and history of museological institutions, relationship between tourism and museums, and visitation and experience in museological institutions. Afterwards, the comments and photographs were analyzed through Content Analysis, with the help of Iramuteq, Excel and MAXQDA software, in order to identify the characteristic and outstanding components of the visitation. The data obtained in the analysis of the photographs were related to the photographic analysis data proposed by Donaire and Dali (2011) and categories elaborated from the museological ternary: society, territory and heritage. Finally, we reflected on the visit to the Museu da Loucura, from the perspective of interaction between the museum experience and the tourist experience. The results reveal that the outstanding components of the visitation are the building's facade, the staircase, the electroshock machines, the interpretive panels and the photographs of the collection on display. These components help assign personal value and impact the visitor experience, which encourages empathy and humanization. It is also considered that visitation can cause negative sensations, but that these sensations are necessary for the visitor's personal transformation. This work has three main contributions. First, it identifies components that work in harmony between the tourist experience and the museum experience, namely: temporality, heritage preservation, electronic word-of-mouth and personal transformation. Second, the research report provides an analytical path designed in an interdisciplinary way, which can be applied to the analysis of comments and photographs of visitors of similar attractions. Thirdly, there is the expansion of studies related to Sensitive Memory Museums, regarding the visitation experience, through the understanding of the peculiarities that are reported by visitors on social networks in the post-visit of the Museu da Loucura.
