Resumo: O objeto de estudo da presente escrita é analisar a figura identitária nacional brasileira almejada (e a não quista) presente na seleção das obras de Albert Eckhout feita por Dom Pedro II no final do Segundo Reinado (1877-1878). As obras de Eckhout em questão são reproduções de seis quadros do referido artista, realizadas pelo pintor dinamarquês Niels Aagard Lützen entre os anos de 1877-1878 atendendo um encargo de Dom Pedro II, então Imperador do Brasil. Na reflexão proposta, será utilizado o método de análise de obras de arte apresentado pelo historiador galês Michael Baxandall, igualmente as considerações do historiador Simon Schama sobre memória e paisagem. Como suporte teórico será aplicado reflexões de Benedict Anderson, em especial, suas discussões sobre nação, nacionalismo e nacionalidade presentes em seu livro Comunidades Imaginadas. A escolha dos conceitos de Anderson se deu com o objetivo de articular a seleção, a encomenda e a recepção dessas obras de Eckhout com as tentativas de legitimar uma identidade nacional feita pela elite cultural brasileira na segunda parte do séc. XIX. Palavras Chaves: Albert Eckhout, Romantismo Indianista, Racialismo, Políticas indigenistas no séc.XIX.Abstract: The object of study of this writing is to analyze the desired Brazilian national identity figure (and the non-wanted one) present in the selection of the works of Albert Eckhout made by Dom Pedro II at the end of the Second Reign (1877-1878). Eckhout's works in question are reproductions of six paintings by the aforementioned artist, made by the Danish painter Niels Aagard Lützen between the years 1877- 1878, under the command of Dom Pedro II, then Emperor of Brazil. In the proposed reflection, the method of analysis of works of art presented by the Welsh historian Michael Baxandall will be used, as well as the considerations of the historian Simon Schama on memory and landscape. As theoretical support, reflections by Benedict Anderson will be applied, in particular, his discussions about nation, nationalism and nationality present in his book Imagined Communities. The choice of Anderson's concepts was made with the aim of articulating the selection, ordering and reception of these works by Eckhout with the attempts to legitimize a national identity made by the Brazilian cultural elite in the second part of the century.
