Abstract: The implementation of the lean production philosophy in manufacturing companies has been made by means of adaptation of the traditional forms of work to the new lean techniques and tools, with intention to minimize waste, such as overproduction and inventories. Amongst the many available techniques and tools, the cellular layout and the SMED (single minute exchange of die), also called quick set-up, have brought significant benefits to the reduction of the batch size of parts, with the goal of reaching the single piece flow and so optimize the productivity. The aim of this dissertation is to study the impact of the introduction of the single piece flow in capacity, inventory, throughput time and labor allocation in a workcell. The intention is to minimize the production lead time, as well as to increase the market response and to support the production leveling. The most important consequences of these changes are the increase of the company’s flexibility due to a more efficient adaptation to the changes of product mix by the customers, as well as the decreasing of inventories and production cost. By means of simulation modeling and scenarios analysis of a virtual workcell for the machining of steel parts, it was designed and performed a study of thirteen stages with five scenarios each. It converged from the large transference lot size with long set-up times to the single piece flow with short set-up times. Through the obtained results some actions were proposed to facilitate the implementation of the single piece flow and to prevent the loss of capacity and the increase of production cost.
