Abstract: The knowledge of the traits involved in the selection process of the clones, in the different stages of genetic improvement, as well as the use of strategies that contribute to the selection process, are important to assist in the selection of the new sugar cane genotypes. The objective of this work was to determine the importance of the agronomic traits involved in the selection process of clones, in order to optimize the selection process in populations destined to obtain energy cane. The experiment was carried out at the Paranavaí Experimental Station, belonging to the Federal University of Paraná. Previously, 220 clones selected in the first test phase (T1) were planted in June 2014 in an incomplete block design. The plots were constituted of two rows of 5.0 meters spaced 1.4 meters, with planting of 18 buds per meter. The evaluations of the production and quality components were carried out in the plant cane plant and first ratoon cycles. It was done in the cycle of plant cane the assignment of notes for the traits, straw removal, stalk diameter, stalk number, stalk height, sprouting lateral, growth habit, flowering, stalk without broth, note for plant vigor, incidence of smut, brown rust and orange rust. The data obtained were analyzed through path analysis and logistic regression. In the plant cane and first ratoon cycles, the ton of stalks per hectare with straw, ton of stalks per hectare without straw, ton of fiber per hectare with straw and ton of sucrose per hectare without straw were used as dependent characters. For the plant cane cycle, the characters with the greatest direct effect in the ton of stems per hectare with straw, ton of stems per hectare without straw, and ton of fiber per hectare with straw were average stem weight and number of stems. Those with the highest direct effect in the ton of sucrose per hectare without straw were mean weight of the stem, apparent sucrose content followed by stalk number. In the first ratoon cycle, these characters remained the most effective. The mass method selected 38 clones in T2, while logistic regression models, called qualitative and quantitative, selected 42 and 22 clones respectively. The predictive capacity of the models, qualitative and quantitative were 94% and 87%, respectively. The use of a logistic model composed of categorical variables was efficient and could be used in the process of clonal selection in energy cane populations. Keywords: genetic improvement, biomass, parth analysis, logistic regression.
