Abstract

Resumo: O objetivo desta tese é analisar as impressões que o argentino Domingo Faustino Sarmiento construiu acerca do Brasil em diferentes momentos do século XIX. Diversos estudos apontam para as dificuldades em mapear as relações entre as Américas de línguas espanhola e portuguesa e, principalmente, em pesquisar os momentos de confluências e identidades entre elas. Esta análise visa demonstrar o interesse deste autor pelo Império brasileiro e os critérios que selecionou para analisá-lo. Ao longo do século XX, Sarmiento foi canonizado como um dos pensadores mais significativos e paradigmáticos do século XIX para a América Latina. Sua escrita se caracterizou por um estilo combativo e apaixonado e seus posicionamentos geraram inúmeras controvérsias e debates. Neste trabalho, questiona-se sobre os elementos acionados por esse autor para refletir sobre o vizinho de língua portuguesa, considerando o contexto de sua escrita. A reflexão teve seus pressupostos teóricos tomados da noção de conexão histórica, de Serge Gruzinski, devido à preocupação em postular as relações existentes entre as diferentes Américas, tomando como estudo de caso os escritos de Sarmiento; da noção de cultura desenvolvida por Edward Said, segundo a qual a cultura é o local de embate político, e as reflexões sobre trajetória propostas por Norbert Elias em Mozart: sociologia de um gênio. Abstract: The objective of this thesis is to analyze the impressions that the Argentine Domingo Faustino Sarmiento built about Brazil at different times of the nineteenth century. Several studies point to difficulties in mapping the relationships between the Americas of Spanish and Portuguese, and especially on search times and identities of confluences between them. This analysis aims to demonstrate the interest of this author by the Brazilian Empire and the criteria selected to analyze it. Throughout the twentieth century, Sarmiento was canonized as one of the most significant and paradigmatic thinkers of the nineteenth century for Latin America. His writing was characterized by a combative and passionate style and their placements generated numerous controversies and debates. In this work, it asks about the elements triggered by the author to reflect on the Portuguese-speaking neighbor, considering the context of your writing. The reflection was the assumptions taken the notion of historical connection, Serge Gruzinski due to concern postulate the relationships between different Americas, taking as case study the writings of Sarmiento; the notion of culture developed by Edward Said, according to which culture is the site of political struggle and the reflections on the proposed trajectory by Norbert Elias on Mozart: sociology of Genius.
