Abstract: The present text analyses the Brazilian National Textbook Program (PNLD) in the teaching and learning of reading in English in high schools articulated with theories of Critical Literacy (CL). For that purpose, this investigation assumes reading from the perspective of reading the wor(l)d (FREIRE & MACEDO, 1990). In terms of methodology, techniques and procedures from an ethnographic standpoint were used, taking on an interpretive perspective of investigation and analysis. The research was divided into two distinct periods: the first focused on the analysis of different fragments of the PNLD LEM 2012 GUIDE which indicate the specific criteria for the work with reading in the textbooks of English in their relationship with the national documents that serve as framework in terms of theoretical and methodological procedures sealed by the Ministry of Education in terms of the work with reading in foreign languages in high schools. Such relationship allowed the contrast between different perspectives with what the High School Curricular Framework of Reference (OCEM) propose, specifically related to the teaching of reading in English. The analysis indicate a choice from the PNLD towards a theoretical and methodological stand divergent from what is proposed by the OCEM, showing preference to procedures presented in other documents sealed by the same scope of the Estate, thus moving away from a Critical Literacy perspective present in the OCEM. The second period included the participation of teachers of English in public high schols and aimed, by means of the analysis of their perceptions on the fragments from the GUIDE, to establish relations of approximation or distancing of PNLD and CL, including their perceptions about the textbooks used in their own contexts. The contributions from those teachers served, to a certain extent, to reinforce the results of the first moment of the research. The achieved results may serve for (re)interpretations of the relevance of PNLD in different contexts as well as to emphasize the diversity of understandings about the teaching and learning of reading in high schools.
