Abstract: The Saturniidae family is distributed in all the continents, except in the polar areas.
It presents about 1526 species in 165 genera, being the group with the largest diversity
among Bombycoidea. Approximately 964 species are known in the Neotropical area.
Despite of many of the areas in Brazil have been poorly studied, the bibliography and the
entomological collections indicate the occurrence of 380 species. The Arsenurinae
subfamily, object of this study, presents 61 species distributed exclusively in 10
Neotropical genera. The phylogenetic relationships among Arsenurinae stay poorly known,
there is only one study that presents hypothesis on the relationships among the genera. The
goals of this work were: to test the monophyly of the subfamily, tribes and genera; to
establish the relationships among the formed clades; to propose the relationships for the
first time among the species of each genera and to present the complete morphological
study of a species of the tribe Almeidaiini. The cladistc analysis were made based on
morphological characters. The matrixes were built in NDE 0.5.0 version, analyzed in the
NONA program and the cladograms visualized in Winclada 1.00.08, using heuristic
search, with 1000 replications and ACCTRAN optimizations (Accelerated transformation).
The results indicated that the subfamily, the tribes and the genera are monophyletic groups.
The analysis resulted in the following relationships hypothesis among the genera:
(Almeidaia ((Loxolomia, Copiopteryx) (Rhescyntis ((Grammopelta, Arsenura) (Caio
(Paradaemonia (Dysdaemonia, Titaea))))))). The relationships among the species of each
one of the genera is the following: Copiopteryx (C. derceto (C. virgo ((C. semiramis) (C.
jehovah, C. sonthonnaxi)))); Rhescyntis (R. pseudomartii ((R. hippodamia, R. reducta) (R.
descimoni, R. hermes))); Arsenura with four hypotheses, belonging one to them
(((A.meander, A.pandora) (A.polyodonta (A. orbignyana, A. xanthopus))) (((A. rebeli (A.
mossi (A. beebei, ciocolatina))) (A. armida, A. archianassa (A. albopicta, A. delormei)))
((A. aspasia, A. biundulata) ((A. sylla, A. thomsoni) (A. cymonia (A. ponderosa (A.batesii,
A.drucei))))))); Caio (C. romulus (C. harrietae(C. championi, C. richardsoni)));
Dysdaemonia (D. brasiliensis (D. fosteri (D. boreas, D. concisa))); Titaea with two
hypotheses (T. orsinome ( T. timur (T. lemoulti, T. tamerlan))) and ((T.orsinome, T.timur)
(T.lemoulti,T. tamerlan)); Paradaemonia consensus of three cladograms ((P.samba (P.
andensis, P.orsilochus)) ((P.ruschii (P. nycteris, P. thelia)) ((P. terrena (((P. sp. n.,
P.platydesmia)((P.berlai, P. mayi) (P. gravis, P. pluto)))))). The morphological study of A.
aidae (Almeidaiini) demonstrates that species shares several characters with Arsenurini.
However it also presents significant differences, as the pilífers absence, and fore tibia with
a very strong and proeminent apical spine, for example.
