Uma tradução da Grammatica Speculativa de Tomás de Erfurt para o português : acompanhada de um estudo introdutório, notas e glossário

Abstract

Resumo: Esta tese consiste de um estudo introdutório, um glossário e uma tradução anotada de uma obra que é relevante para a história do pensamento ocidental e está ainda inédita no mundo lusófono: a Grammatica speculativa de Tomás de Erfurt (ca. 1310). O objetivo específico da seção introdutória deste trabalho é responder a uma série de perguntas sobre a especificidade da gramática de Tomás de Erfurt, tais como o seu impacto e as maneiras como antecipou escolhas teóricas que a linguística ocidental faria nos séculos que se seguiram ao fim da Escolástica medieval. Os principais modelos teóricos utilizados na busca por essas respostas foram a Historiografia Linguística (HL) de Konrad Koerner (1989), a teoria sociológica e histórica para a formação de grupos de pesquisadores de Stephen Murray (1998) e a História e Filosofia da Linguística (HFL) de Pierre Swiggers (2004). De acordo com Koerner (1989, p. 55-6), o estudo da história de uma teoria linguística deve levar em conta tanto os seus fatores externos, que são seu meio intelectual ou clima de opinião, quanto seus fatores teóricos ou internos. Este trabalho assumiu como premissa essas duas dimensões da história das teorias linguísticas. Nesse sentido, a seção histórico-filosófica deste trabalho não apenas tenta localizar alguns dos desenvolvimentos mais relevantes feitos pelos antecedentes históricos da Grammatica speculativa, mas também procura esclarecer o contexto dos debates teóricos em que os modistas estavam envolvidos no início do séc. XIV. Ademais, em um sentido amplo, o objetivo deste trabalho é tornar-se uma ferramenta interpretativa para uma compreensão mais abrangente de uma obra escrita há mais de 700 anos em um contexto muito diferente do de hoje, mas que revela antecipações e particularidades consideráveis.

Abstract: This thesis consists of an introductory study, a glossary and an annotated translation of a work which is relevant to the history of Western thought and is still novel to the Portuguese speaking world: the Grammatica speculativa of Thomas of Erfurt (ca. 1310). The specific objective of the introductory section is to answer a series of questions about the specificity of the grammar of Thomas of Erfurt such as its impact and ways in which it anticipated theoretical choices which Western Linguistics would make in the centuries following the end of Medieval Scholasticism. The main theoretical models used in the search for these answers were the Historiography of Linguistics (HL) of Konrad Koerner (1989), the sociological and historical theory for the formation of research groups of Stephen Murray (1998) and the History and Philosophy of Linguistics (HPL) of Pierre Swiggers (2004). According to Koerner (1989, p. 55-6), the study of the history of a linguistic theory must take into account both external factors which are its intellectual mileau or climate of opinion and its internal or theoretical factors. These two dimensions of the history of linguistic theories are here assumed as premises. Accordingly, the historical-philosophical section not only attempts to identify some of the most relevant developments made by the historical antecedents of the Grammatica speculativa, but also tries to clarify the context of the theoretical debates in which the Modistae were involved in the early XIV century. Moreover, in a broad sense, the goal of this thesis is to become an interpretative tool for a more comprehensive understanding of a work written more than 700 years ago in a context very different from that of today, but which shows considerable anticipations and particularities.
