Abstract: This paper studies strategies of relation in utterances expressed with the conjunctions But and Although. The strategy used at the link connection with But aims to present an argument reporting an expectation for a determined conclusion. When a second argument introduced by But is presented, the mentioned expectation is interrupted, since such argument points out to a different conclusion; and the second one prevails at the overall link connection. Link connections with Although might present two strategies: introducing the second or the first argument; in both cases the conclusion that prevails at this link connection is the one of the argument not introduced by Although. The defined hypothesis during development of this dissertation presumes that, in some cases, the opposite relation established by But might be foreseen in the first argument, even before the conjunction is given, so that the argument that confronts with the previous one might not always surprisingly appear. The paper also describes some linguistic features that show the referred adversity. In order to comprehend the involved strategies by using these conjunctions, two inseparable aspects at the formation of such strategies were necessary to be analyzed: Argumentation and Polyphony, therefore, Semantics of the Event studies by Eduardo Guimarães were taken into consideration. Analysis was carried out on a corpus taken from two newspapers texts: O Estado de São Paulo and O Estado de Goiás. At conclusion it was confirmed that interaction between Argumentation and Polyphony occurs during language production. And, the hereunder studied strategies of relation depend on this interaction, so that they are in this relation, frustratingly or correspondingly, established according to and linguistically highlighted.
