Abstract: This study evaluates 261 professionals of health who attended Courses, given by the Ministry of Health, on the Control of Nosocomial Infection, and 57 hospitals which also took part in these courses through their chosen representatives. The courses were given by the Training Centre of the "Hospital de Clínicas" (General Hospital) of the Federal University of Parana. The target of the courses was to enable those professionals to start and implement Committees to Control the infection in hospitals. At the end of 5 years of training, only 15 professionals were still working with Control of infection and only 5 (the ones of the Training Centre itself) had a working schedule which was considered adequate by the ministerial patterns. The majority of the hospitals which were observed had not established their committees or were only performing part of the range of the necessary functions to the development of an effective programme for the control of infection in the hospitals. This piece of work studies the reasons for these frustating results and presents strategies which were proved to be more efficient to the control of infection in the hospitals in the State of Paraná.
