Abstract: The doctorate thesis "The reader and the city", developed in the field of the Literary Studies, investigates the reading practices of 12 people with little exposition to academic literacy and their relations with the urban environment and with their own academic memory, a relationship that hypothetically, results in the resignification of territory, nearing it to the concept of "place". The 12 people live and work either in Curitiba or in its metropolitan area and are, in their majority, part of what has been called since the 2000s the "new middle class" (Class C). The goal of the research is to gather data and sources about what here is called "exception readers", given that, according to statistics, there are usually few obstinate readers amongst those that attended the education system for less than 12 years. The following instances were used to develop this work: participant observation, the in-depth interview and laboratories with groups of potential readers in their specific territories - i.e.: irregular occupations, schools for teenagers in conflict with the law, low-income neighborhoods. Pro-book and reading initiatives developed both inside and outside schools, in places such as condominiums, favelas and commercial areas, were equally observed so that the implications between reading and participating on the city's daily routines would be more accurate. Authors that study reception, reading theorists, sociologists that study urban life and identity, as well as data regarding consumer relations, education and cultural practices gave theoretical foundation to the research. Among the conclusions stands out the fact that the reading practices of readers with little schooling are not well known, although they are part of an audience tradition in Brazil as well as in Portugal, with records dating from the 19th century. And these practices can help the formulation of reading programs able to reach large masses of Brazilians who evade formal education, though there is still desire to continue a life as a reader and to be a participating reader of the city's dynamics.
