Abstract: The photophysical and photovoltaic properties of three alternated fluorenethiophene copolymers were studied. With similar structure the copolymers differed by the numbers of thiophene units linked to each fluorene one, namely poly(9,9'-n-dihexyl-2,7-fluorene-alt-2,5-thiophene) (LaPPS23), poly(9,9'-ndihexyl- 2,7-fluorene-alt-5,5':2,2'-bithiophene) (LaPPS43) and poly(9,9'-ndihexyl- 2,7-fluorene-alt-5,5'':2,2':5',2''-terthiophene) (LaPPS45). All three materials were synthesized through the Suzuki cross coupling polycondensation. The structures of the intermediates and of the final products were described and discussed along with a mechanistic proposal for them. The photophysical properties were studied in solutions of different concentrations and in film form, making it possible to access the influence of the number of thiophene rings in the repeating unit. The photovoltaic properties of bilayer cells and in bulk heterojunction configurations using the polymers LaPPS 23, LaPPS 43 and LaPPS 45 as active layer were evaluated, including variations in cell parameters specially the thickness. The correlations between photophysical and photovoltaic behaviors were addressed. The electronic properties were analyzed through mobility measurements and the overall properties pointed out to LaPPS 45 as the best material, as anticipated, due to the large number of thiophene units. However, after thermal annealing the polymer containing two thiophene rings presented the best photovolataic efficiency, seven fold greater than the pristine material. The morphology, studied by atomic force microscopy, revealed to be one of the key factors for the performance of the materials as solar cells.
