Abstract: This research study looks at the Metodologia e Prática de Ensino de Inglês I (MPEI) at the Letras course in a state university in the south of Brazil. The main goals were to verify which model of teacher education the course is based on and how it contributes to the development of reflective teachers. The research was carried out according to the features of a case study. The subjects of the present study were the teacher and the MPEI student-teachers. In order to collect the data, three interviews were carried out in 1998 with the MPEI teacher, and two questionnaires were applied to the future teachers, one in the beginning and one in the end of the course. The curriculum of the course was also analyzed. The data collected was analyzed in the light of the reflective theory, which is based on the writings of: Dewey, Schön, Wallace, Allwright, Nunan, and also the research studies of Gimenez, Almeida Filho, Moll da Cunha, Abrahão, Mateus, and Ortenzi among others. The main conclusions reached with this study were: the MPEI course is seen from different perspectives by the student teachers and the teacher. The student teachers see the course as a training course and expect that by the end of the course they will be prepared to teach English. The teacher, on the other hand, sees the course as a mixture of the two perspectives: training and development. As the teacher implements the program it is possible to observe that at times the approach, the process and the contents present features of a training course and at other times the teacher sees the student teachers as active participants in the process of learning to teach, which is a feature of development courses. Conclusions of this study show that the MPEI course is a mixture of the two different approaches (training and development), which we may state is positive in view of the culture the course operates within.
