Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the intonational pattern of WH-Exclamatives, Free Small Clauses, Dependent Small Clauses and Cleft sentences in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and its possible relationship with syntax. This thesis is divided into three main parts according to the research objectives. In the first part, it is a literature review of texts dealing with the syntax and semantics of Free Small Clauses, Dependent Small Clauses and WH-Exclamatives, such as Kato (2007), Sibaldo (2009), Zanuttini and Portner (2003) and other texts which are somehow linked to the Generative Theory. In the second part, in order to establish the intonation pattern of WH-Exclamatives, Free Small Clauses, Dependent Small Clauses and cleft sentences, an experiment was developed: it was recorded six female subjects stating, in total, 1560sentences, in which 624 which have been used here. For data analysis, the software MOMEL/INTSINT for PRAAT was used. Finally, in the third part, the objective was to determine, based on literature review about syntax and semantics and the results of the experiment, the possibility of a relationship between the intonation pattern and the syntax of these sentences.
