    Abstract

Five areas of Tabebuia cassinoides formations were chosen on the coast of Parana state in order to undergo phytossociological and successional studies. The sampling method used derived from the transect method, and results show data of absolute and relative abundance, frequency and dominance, cover and importance percentages, and sociability index. The botanized material was identified by Dr. Gert Hatschbach, from the Municipal Botanical Museum of Curitiba, and has been stored in the "Escola de Florestas de Curitiba" Herbarium, in the Federal University of Parana. Results relative to vegetal succession were based on data from the structural analysis and on similarity and diversity indexes, and show a decline of the T. cassinoides predominance along five different stages of development of these formations. This paper points out the biological richness of the herbaceous stratum of this vegetation type, and emphasizes the importance of the conservation of these areas with genetic purposes and so that the currently used management techniques can be improved.
