Abstract: This thesis presents the study of oil shale byproducts and soils with these materials were added as fertilizer, allowing the use of alternative materials with low cost, efficient agronomic (assessing the dissolved nutrients to plants) and without provoke environmental hazards (being certain priority polyaromatic organic compounds - 16 PAHs - as defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - U.S. EPA). The samples studied were row oil shale (ROS), powdere oil shale (POS), oil shale retorted (OSR) and dolomitic limestone (DLS). Among these 4 samples, the OSR is stored in piles, and from this pile were collected samples from two different areas: from surface of storage pile (OSRsur) and from inside of storage pile (OSRins). All these 5 samples were characterized chemically and were determined the distribution of 16 PAHs in each sample as the concentration considered normal in environmental levels, mainly by US-EPA and by Brazilian standards (NBR and CETESB) defyning the legislation to PAHs in agricultural soils, groundwater and leaching tests. The soil samples studied were collected in 6 different areas, with different concentrations of the byproducts added (OSR, POS and DLS) in different years (2005 and 2006). The same approach applied to oil shale byproducts concerning the presence of nutrients and PAHs in these soil areas were conducted. Thus, the researches have been done in four stages. In the first stage we studied the oil shale and its derivatives, which are good examples of these soils at different stages of weathering. The results indicated interaction between iron oxides and PAHs in environmental samples. Due the results of this work, we suggest the addition of Brazilian oil shale byproduct to soils dispersed in shallow piles, to favor degradation of PAHs. The second stage of this thesis has provided insights into the distribution pattern of PAHs in the soil in which the oil shale byproducts were added as fertilizers. The results indicate that PAHs with two, three and four aromatic rings have the highest contributions. When comparing the concentrations of PAHs extracted with levels considered safe environmentally, defined by US-EPA and Cetesb the values meet legisltation. In the third stage we analyzed the behavior and movement of PAHs in water to assess the environmental impact of these organic compounds in groundwater with concentrations also meeting legislation and without inhibition using test with Vibrio fisheri bacterium. At last, we investigated the solubility and availability of nutrients in soil in which the oil shale byproducts were added, and also from the pure byproducts. We observed that dissolved nutrients concentrations contributing with soil fertility, and acting like good agronomic effects. All results were obtained mainly from gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) (for studies of PAHs) and atomic emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-OES) (for nutrients studies). Other techniques have also provided important contributions and will be described in this thesis.
