This study aimed to evaluate the use of forest and woody residues and for energy purposes, through characterization and analysis of the economic feasibility of drying for energy. The collection was made in a firm engaged in harvesting and processing wood of Pinus taeda L., the sources of waste processing have been identified and proceeded to collect the materials, plus the residue from forest harvesting was collected. Data concerning the market value of the materials collected were also obtained. The residues were characterized according to the moisture, calorific value, density and levels that fixed carbon and ash. An adjustment of mathematical models that could express the relation between moisture and caloric value for the materials were done. For the analysis of economic feasibility calculations were made and the reason of cost benefit / cost for the use of a dryer particles. The slabs and crop residue showed high levels of humidity and the slabs had higher density and higher fixed carbon content. The ash content was statistically equal for all materials. The calorific value is presented in full in 4550 and 4950 kcal / kg calorific value and useful for slabs crop residues showed a decrease seen with the high moisture content of these materials. The model of regression selected could express in more than 97 % the relation between caloric value and of moisture content. Regarding the analysis of costs, the major cost component for the use of the dryer is the supply of the furnace. With the Benefit / Cost Ratio can reveal that the drying process for the slabs and debris of the forest is economically viable, although according to the values of marketing materials, if any shaver, or trim saw dust in a sustainable way in the region, it is feasible to use these as an energy source, thus requiring no drying.
