Dócil, elegante e caridosa : representação das mulheres paraguaias na imprensa do pós-guerra no Paraguai (1869-1904)

Abstract

Resumo: A presente tese tem como objetivo analisar as representações das mulheres produzidas pela imprensa paraguaia no período do pós-Guerra do Paraguai, entre os anos de 1869 e 1904. No pós-Guerra as reformas urbanas visavam transformações tanto na esfera pública quanto na esfera privada, ao par de uma ampla reformulação dos costumes das pessoas. Corpos, residências, serviços prestados e o espaço das ruas foram alvo do olhar da imprensa, visando a construção e a consolidação de uma sociedade nos moldes modernos e comprometida com o projeto liberal proposto pelas elites dirigentes. A busca de soluções para a crise demográfica que se abatera sobre o país após o final da Guerra significou o reforço das fronteiras de gênero com o enaltecimento da maternidade, bem como a exclusão das mulheres do espaço público. Desse modo, os discursos tentavam disciplinar e enquadrar as mulheres de acordo com as conveniências sociais ditadas pela elite paraguaia. Esses discursos, do ponto de vista das relações de gênero, tentavam construir uma nova imagem para as mulheres paraguaias, pautada na caridade, na elegância e na família patriarcal, com hábitos e comportamentos exemplares, excluindo a sua presença do espaço público na sociedade que tentava se reconstruir, ao mesmo tempo em que as relegava no pós-Guerra à esfera privada e tradicional do lar.

Abstract: The present thesis has the objective of analyzing the representations of the women produced by the Paraguayan press in the period of the Paraguay postwar, between the years of 1869 and 1904. In the postwar the urban reforms aimed transformations in the public sphere as much as in the private sphere, at par of a broad reformulation of the people’s customs. Bodies, residences, service and the space of the streets were aim of the press attention, aiming at the construction and the consolidation of a society in the modern molds and committed with the liberal project proposed by the manager elite. The search for solutions for the demographic crisis that the country was going through after the end of the War signified the reinforcement of the gender border with the praise of the maternity, as the exclusion of the women from the public space. Thereby the speeches tried to discipline and fit the women according to the social conveniences dictated by the Paraguayan elite. Those speeches, from the gender relations viewpoint, tried to build a new image for the Paraguayan women, guided in the charity, in the elegance and in the patriarchal family, with habits and exemplary behaviors, excluding their presence from the public space in the society that was being reconstructed, meanwhile relegated them in the postwar to the traditional and private domestic sphere.
