Abstract : The present work focus on the variation /r/ ~ /w/detected in the Caipira dialect as spoken at Boa Vista de Santa Cruz, a village in Rosario do Ivai, in the central area of Parana (in Brazil). The starting point for the study of the above-mentioned variation is the hypothesis that post-vocalic /r/,which originated from the /l/ in the Caiplna. dialect, is undergoing a vocalization process which would result in a re-approximation of that dialect and the standard Brazilian Portuguese. The aim of this work is to confirm the hypothesis by analysing the mentioned variation from three points of view: the phonological, the lexical and the social ones. In the phonological perspective, the preceeding vowel and stress patterns are examined in order to verify whether these types of phonological features exert any conditioning effect on the detected variation. In the lexical perspective an attempt is made to identify the group(s) of items that facilitate (r)or inhibit(s) the vocalization process. In the social perspective, correlations with age and level of education are established in order to verify the relevance of these factors in the vocalization of /r/. On the other hand, the analysis of the vocalization process in the lexical and social perspectives aims at testing a lexical diffusion model, compatible with sociolinguistic research, using data from Brazilian Portuguese.
