Abstract : This work dealt with the linguistic and sociolinguistic description of a bilingual community (English-Portuguese), in Porto Velho - RO. Although English is a highly prestigious language all over the world, it was noticed that it is disappearing in that community. The linguistic research, described the morfological, syntactical and lexical aspects of the data, showing the deviations of Standard English that had characteristics of the English spoken in Barbados, Grenada, or Portuguese influence and other creóle languages, "pidgins" and dialects. This work also dealt with a sociolinguistic research that looked for the reasons of language shift. Among the structural factors mentioned by GILES et alii that most influenced the language, shift, were: racial prejudice suffered by people from the community and the low status of this variety. The community was also studied in the light of the theory of social networks mentioned by BORT ONI-RICARD0. It demonstrated that the lack of webs of transactions among speakers was a factor of sparse and uniplex network and the probable cause of language shift.
