Abstract : This dissertation intends to present the problem of meaning within the sociological approach of Mikhail Bakhtin. In order to reach this goal, the Speach Act Theory was taken for a critical analysis. This theory was chosen because, unlike many others, it attempts to explain language not only as having a cognitive function but also considering the' moment and the situation of the speech act for the understanding of the utterance. These factors are usually absent from the linguistic studies because they are considered to be problematic to the theories. We try to show how Searle, diverting from the first proposal of the Speech Act Theory, introduces the notion of Intentionality which leads the theory to an individualistic and subjetivistic position about language. The central thesis of the Sociological Theory is that the meaning is constructed in social organized groups. The dichotomies langue/parolé, meaning/form are discarded and the linguistic phenomenon is considered in its totality. The immediate social situation and the wider social environment determine the structure and the meaning of the utterance. Bakhtin's theory is grounded on the dialetic conception of the world. - It considers language a phenomenon in process, and determined by socio-historical factors.
