| pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | Abstract: This dissertation has to do with the analysis of those constructions in the English language formed by 'verb+ing' together with the auxiliary 'to be', constituting what is called 'Progressive Tense'; and its parallel construction in Portuguese. To support our analysis we introduce the reader to some of the main works regarding the analysis of tense and aspect, as well as the theory named DRT. We make use of this theory in order to formalize the temporal and aspectual constitution of the meaning of sentences in both simple and progressive forms of English in the past tense. The same theory, after the modification we will have proposed, should be able to represent sentences in both simple and progressive forms of Portuguese in the past tense. Our main concern is to account for the two possibilities of presenting progressive sentences in Portuguese: in the 'imperfective' (estava verb+ndo) and 'perfective' (esteve verb+ndo) aspect. After analysing the difference between the two progressive constructions in Portuguese - which has no parallel in English - we will be suggesting a reform in the DRS presented by Kamp & Reyle (1993) for the English language, so that we can express the difference between the two progressive forms of Portuguese in past tense sentences. | pt_BR |
